The book does suffer somewhat in that it has some inconsistencies with previous books in this series, particularly regarding some aspects of Godmotherly magic, but it is nonetheless quite worthwhile on its own merits.

This fantasy series from Mercedes Lackey is absolutely FUN. If you are a grown-up who believes in fairy tales, you won't have to suspend your beliefs to get into the spirit. If you are a young adult, this book may even cement your belief in fairy tales and magic.
"Tradition" is the set of beliefs which have accumulated over the centuries from fairy tales, fables, myths & legends and Tradition is very strong in the 500 Kingdoms. For the fourth time we are propelled into such a story, with the feeling these are REAL people with real problems. And magic is just a part of life.

I've found Lackey's Five Hundred Kingdoms series to be entertaining and enjoyable, and Snow Queen is no exception. The story is easy to follow, with likable characters and enough plot and development to keep me entertained throughout the book. If you are looking for a deep, reflective, introspective work that will challenge your assumptions about life, this isn't what you're looking for. On the other hand, if you want some light reading to take your mind off your daily troubles for a while, this book is a pretty good buy.
Nice continuance of a good tale. I like Mercedes Lackey, she can always deliver a good story. I particularly like the Five Hundred Kingdoms series.
I'm still wading my way through the story but got so fed up by the inconsistencies and bad editing, I had to vent. The spelling errors have been bad enough but when the characters' names are being mixed up, it's just too much. One minute we're reading about Aleksia making her preparations in a cave and the next we're reading that it's Annukka that's doing it. There'a also a few paragraphs that is repeated in two different places. Bad quality control. Seriously.
This was an interesting take on the old fairy tale, The Snow Queen. It starts off with the Snow Queen, who is actually a "good fairy godmother". If you've read the Five Hundred Kingdoms series, you will understand the "Tradition" that is always trying to push people into fairy tales. The Snow Queen finds out that someone is terrorizing the countryside in her name and sets out to find this imposter. When dealing with tradition, the godmothers must be very careful to twist and redirect the magic that the tradition builds around events and people. The Five Hundred Kingdom series cleverly update and transform well known stories into adventures that delight readers. The Snow Queen is a delightful and somewhat more mature read, and will satisfy a craving for light reading fantasy.
Pun intended. The Snow Queen is a Godmother of the Five Hundred Kingdoms, ensconced in her magic mountain palace. So why are there mystical whisperings that she's murdering young men of the Sammi peoples, leagues and leagues away?

She must leave her usual post and venture into a frozen wilderness to find out - and the reader is along for the ride. This is a much different story than some of the other entries in this series, because Lackey is drawing on traditional tales that are less familiar than, say, Cinderella. It's very like visiting a foreign land, and she does an excellent job of taking readers on that journey, without explaining every little thing - we are left with a sense of wonder as well as the satisfaction of a tale well told.

Highly recommended for those not afraid of a little snow and something quite out of the usual.
A long-time fan of Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar and Dragon Jouster books, I was slow to make a foray into her Five Hundred Kingdoms series. However, as a devout fan of this particular fairy tale, The Snow Queen was my stepping stone. I found a fantastic retelling of my favorite fairy tale in a setting I wanted to explore more of.
The concept of The Tradition, which governs the life patterns of the denizens of the Five Hundred Kingdoms, is yet another work of magic on the part of an incredibly gifted author. Aleksia, the Snow Queen, is both the heroine of her own story, and a coauthor of so many others. She labors under the shadow of a wicked reputation to improve the lives of selfish, arrogant men and the (often) lily-livered women who love them. Though she does attempt to thwart The Tradition's more harmful aspects, she soon finds herself caught up in a dangerous case of mistaken identity, and if there was ever a case of a deadly copycat, this story holds it.
So, abandoning- or rather, momentarily setting aside- her role as observer and sometime manipulator of fate, Aleksia enters into her own fairy tale in an effort to save the innocent people who stood in the path of the evil Snow Queen and the mysterious Icehart, rumors of which had even others of Aleksia's peers doubting her.

In this, as in all others, Mercedes Lackey has a truly unique way of telling and even retelling stories beloved for generations. I have become an avid fan of Misty's Five HUndred Kingdoms series by reading this book. I fully intend to invest in the rest- and you would do well to do the same!
