"Do you believe in second chances?"

I have no idea why it took me this long to read this novella by JLA. I mean her books are awesome and I love her writing style.

Dream of You is a novella in the Wait for You series. The main characters are Colton Anders and Abby Erickson.

Abby is a freelance editor. She spends her time reading books (great job!) and four years ago she moved back home after she lost her husband in a car accident. Abby's life becomes extremely busy when she is the witness to a murder. Her life is in danger and the cop investigating the case is her teenage crush, Colton.

"A twenty-eight-year-old widow who needed to lose weight."

Colton Anders is Reece's brother (the hero from Fall With Me). He is a good cop but he is willing to put his job in jeopardy to court Abby. He remembers Abby from high school. She had a boyfriend back then and he wasn't going to try anything but now she is free and he won't miss this opportunity.

"I’m sure as hell not going to risk my career to just screw around with a witness. If I’m going to take that risk, it’s going to be worth it.”

I love second chance romances and what better way to explain insta-love in a novella than using this plot line. I love both characters. I think any woman can relate to Abby's insecurities about her body. She was not thin and weight seems to be something we all worry about. Then enters Colton. Sexy, handsome and strong Colton. But, what made me love him was how good he was to Abby. He made her feel safe and beautiful giving her back her confidence. Nothing is better than that.

Dream of you was a great addition to the Wait For You series.

“I’ve dreamed of you for so long.”

Dream Of You A Wait For You Novella edition by Jennifer L Armentrout Romance eBooks Reviews

I usually love JLA's books, and I actually own many of her other titles, but this was painfully not up to par. It almost felt like something that was checked off a to-do list Write a novella for 1001 Dark Nights - check. Name-drop some Indie authors to hopefully send business their way - check. Tackle a book addressing body image issues...Check.

Now time for the reality check-there was nothing sexy about this book. After finishing it, I couldn't describe Abby to you other than to say she had caveman feet, no thigh gap, and dimples in her butt. Height? Indeterminate. Weight? Could be anywhere between 150-450 pounds. I veered between envisioning Colton hiking a Marilyn Monroe-esque vamp up the wall, and Mama June pre-surgery. The author even built a career around the h to allow her to break the fourth dimension and name drop other Indie authors, which felt as awkward and painful as her soapbox rant a short while later INSIDE the book about body image issues about how not enough books tackle body image issues, which is both untrue and wretchedly self-indulgent and ranty for a fictional love story.

Miss Armentrout's portrayal of self-hate being conquered by getting wrapped up in the love of some sexy piece of eye candy of a man fell woefully short. This woman had no positive thoughts about herself. She couldn't even look in a mirror, and not once does anyone encourage her to seek help? No, instead "true love" fixes all her problems, thereby encouraging readers who may suffer from body-image issues to just lose themselves in a man. Even in Wait For You JLA mentions seeking therapy, and yet nowhere in this book is any reality-based advice given to tackle what is a real, common issue many women face.

I found myself cringing so many times, even during scenes that should be sexy. I wanted to see more actual progress from the h, some sort of self-awareness realized, and I just didn't. I also wanted the H to be a little less "fantasy man," considering the h's very real issues, and instead I felt like what I got was the love child of a stripper and military man, complete with protective tendencies, washboard abs, and very little personality other than an unflinching, faithful devotion to the h. I couldn't tell you jack about Colton except he was the kind of man every straight woman drools over, between his good looks and protective tendencies that stayed perfectly within the bounds of healthy, despite some ugly things I'm sure he saw as a homicide detective, and he adored Abby.

Not good enough, Miss Armentrout. I honestly expect so much more of you. You're CAPABLE of so much better.
Dream of You is story number 4.5 in author Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Wait For You series as well as novella number 9 in 1,001 Dark Nights’ 2015 line-up. This was also another first for me, thanks to the intro from 1,001 Dark Nights, and now that I’ve read and loved Dream Of You, I will certainly be picking up the rest of the books in this series!

As if being on the worst date in the history of dating wasn’t a bad enough way to spend an evening, young widow Abby Erickson suddenly finds herself in a circumstance that makes her lame date seem like a paradise….witnessing a murder. Yeah, that would do it. But a bright spot in this epically horrid evening was seeing Colton Anders. Colton, a blast from her high school past was now a detective and one of the men in charge of bringing the killers to justice and keeping her safe in the process.

Fate may have put her in the path of these killers but also out her in the path of her long lost crush. A long lost crush who may have had a thing for Abby, too? As much as she would love to believe that, he was the handsome and popular jock back then and she was the studious book nerd. Sure opposites attract all the time but no way could Colton have a thing for Abby like she did for him all those years ago….or could he? Maybe fate knew a thing or two….

From the very first page of this story I was hooked. Hell, from the very first sentence. Ms. Armentrout completely drew me in and I had so many feelings and emotions for Abby. Sure she witnessed an awful thing and I was scared for her safety, but more than that I was so sad for her that she had lost her husband so young and had really been alone since then. Four years. Alone. She had a few friends and a great job as an editor (which led to some great author and book references that had me grinning like the fan girl I am) but her love life was non-exsitant and that made me so sad for her. But then, like the sun coming out on a cloudy day, things started looking up for this amazing and extremely relatable gal. Colton comes back into her life and shocks her by admitting he had feelings for her but had never acted on them. I loved that their past was a connection that came back to life when this unexpected event happened. It’s their second chance and one they grab onto with both hands. It’s not without a bit of apprehension, however. This leads me to one of my absolute favorite things about this story….Abby is just like so many of us when it comes to her body image. She’s not unhappy per se, just not totally comfortable with herself and the way she looks and that resonated deeply with me, as I imagine it will with many readers. We all have our insecurities and when Abby’s friend gives her the come-to-Jesus talk, I wanted to cheer and shout from the rooftops how much I loved the words written in that paragraph! It’s possibly one of the best parts of a book I’ve read and one that will stay with me. Kudos to Ms. Armentrout for writing what so many of us needed to hear!

Dream Of You is suspenseful, sweet, sexy, emotional; and with wonderful characters, it’s the total package. I cannot wait to go back and start this series from the beginning and have no doubt I will love each book. Thank you, Ms. Armentrout, for a fantastic read!
