This was a surprisingly gripping novel once I finally got into it, as it was suggested by a friend who I don't usually receive recommendations from. However, he knew that I have always been into the sci-fi world, and as predicted, I really enjoyed Allen's book. So much of science fiction is dedicated to exposition and setting the stage for the events, as though the world must first be created and then "sold" to the reader before any events can believably occur. I liked how Allen dove straight into the premise of his book, as though nothing here was out of the ordinary, and let the plot developments inform us about what relevant points we needed to know about this strange world. This seamless introduction into Cova made it much easier to become lost in the story and I must admit, I tore through these 400+ pages voraciously. This wouldn't be considered light summer reading for some, but it's ideal for a sci-fi/fantasy lover like me.

I particularly like how full this novel is, without being overwhelming or difficult to follow. The central plot was always clear, although it was perpetually cloaked in mystery and suspense. However, there were so much peripheral action and so many side stories that it kept your mind bouncing around between the characters, understanding more and more about their personalities and motivations as the story progressed. Some authors try to maintain a high energy level, but unfortunately have it come out as manic. Allen kept the action flowing at a near-constant rate, without ever making me feel saturated or numbed to his beautiful prose, perhaps because he coupled it with realistic, well-constructed dialogue and a confident editorial pen. Nicely done from top to bottom - I'll be looking for more books from this author.

I quickly got pulled into this story and couldn't put it down. The characters and their progression was engaging throughout the book. The characters' powers are really fun.
A truly amazing first book for Lander Allen. The plot has twists and turns and keeps you reading. Lander is a good friend of mine and I've known he was writing a book for quite a while. I was so happy and proud to see how well he did in writing this unique science fiction novel. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Truly engrossing. The character description is fantastic. They jump right off the page. Lander Allen's writing style is similar to Brandon Mull with his Fablehaven series. Portals of the Grave is truly a treat for lovers of the Sci-Fi genre. I really loved this story. This deserves a full 5 stars! You really laugh and cry along with the characters every step of the way. Amazingly realistic descriptions. Allen painted a vibrant picture. I love the use of magic in this story. Spoiler Alert The Tetrapath monsters in this story are terrifying - especially when you learn who they really are! The technology fused with magic really transcends this story to a whole new level! I've picked up book 2, "Mists of Affliction", and I'm excited to see what happens next!
