Well, I am still chuckling, which admittedly sounds a bit like a hen's cackle, but often there's a snort in there somewhere on my end.
A friend was reading this on vacation, and kept giving me teasers as we met for lunch, "We are looking at chicken DNA now," or, "We just started discussing the cock", he'd deadpan, all superior and all.
So of course, I ordered my copy (and one for another friend), and it was waiting me when I returned from that vacation.
It's been one of those books I read for 15 minutes before sleep, each little section informative, often amusing, and always engaging. How did you do it, Andrew Lawler? This is a book about chickens. Even my neighbors who keep chickens could not imagine an engrossing book about CHICKENS.
Yet, here it is...that one book that I didn't believe could exist, and once discovering that it did, had to buy and read.
Learning the tale of their royal status, their eventual migration to every single part of the world, and their long relationship with humans, I fell in love with these two-legged fowl. Chickens. The Red Jungle Fowl, The Harbinger of Civilization.

Why Did the Chicken Cross the World? The Epic Saga of the Bird that Powers Civilization Andrew Lawler 9781476729893 Books Reviews

I never thought I would enjoy reading about chickens but Andrew Lawler made it a historical journey. I was captivated by all the varieties of chickens in the world and how they were used in different cultures.
I now shop at Whole Foods and buy the Joyce Farm chickens. They are raised in a healthier environment and without all the chemicals. The French are passionate about their food chain and I prefer the European culinary choices. I highly recommend this well researched and enrapturing book!
A delightful, insightful, and eye opening read about a little bird which has had an impact on human history. The book is well researched and very readable. Made my summer reading task an adventure.
A very comprehensive discussion of chicken biology, evolution, and history. For anyone interested in chickens -- and who wouldn't be? --- this book is full of amazing anecdotes, fascinating facts, and in-depth discussions.
Read an book on domestication awhile back, but it didn't include poultry, so was glad to see this. It's a bit more anecdotal that I'd prefer, but it does cover all aspects of chickenhood, origins, history, cultivation and cultural aspects, as well as economics and nutrition.
Red Jungle Fowl to Rhode Island Red a great read. If you raise, like, or eat chickens you will enjoy this book. If you enjoy history you will enjoy this book. If you think about where your food comes from or what it really is you will value this book. To understand your world you must read why the chicken crossed the world.
The book is rather lengthy, but I give you very good information. It's interesting to see how one animal did have such an impact on humanity over such a given length of time. If you're enthusiastic about this subject, or history in general, you should read this book.
Talk about taking an essential part of human life that has been almost completely forgotten about in an ethical sense and expanding it into a full blown history narrative. As a vegan who believes in fighting for the rights of all creatures on Earth, I was ecstatic about this book every step of the way. From religious, economic, entertainment, medical, and technology perspectives, this book touches on everything. I would highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to think of a common creature from a whole new perspective. This book will not only make you think of the chicken itself differently but also how the world perceives many "commodities" that we have today.
