I truly hate leaving this review, as the first book in this series is one of my favorite books of all time, but... Maybe my hopes were too high, but this book was nowhere as good or engaging as the first. It was far longer than necessary, the romance was forced and predictable, and the trope of sexual violence as a plot device was extremely disappointing and disturbing, and just lazy story telling in my opinion. Gabriella was unlikable as a protagonist, and the Calbernans' powers and history too numerous, detailed, and nuanced to follow. I look forward to book 3, in the hopes that it recapture the emotion and magic or the first.

Not as good as The Winter King, but still entertaining. It was nice to get some storyline w/ Kham & Wynter, gosh they're so adorable. I still want to read more of them. BUT, this is Summer's story, the youngest of the sisters. I gave this 4 b/c i thought 5 chapters worth was really wasted on too many inner dialogue of both Summer & Dily's passionate dalliances. It got way too redundant of what things they would do to each other, IF, they finally agreed to be couple. And then when they do, MORE adjectives to express their devotion & love towards one another. WE.GOT.IT. And the ending was kind of loosely tied, yes they finally become a couple, but hell you would think Gabi being so distraught over her sister's death, that she would go travel asap to see her sister, Khamsin & Wynter & personally tell them the bad news, not send messengers, also to the see the babies of Khamsin. I thought this action didn't match all that sisterly love at the beginning of the book. Despite these annoyances w/ the book, i can't wait to read about the next 2 sisters. A 5 would go just to the environment, Mystral, that Wilson created for these characters, it's so amazing, i love it.

I’ve read all of Wilson’s books and I am not as impressed with this one. The Sea King reads like someone’s unedited debut YA fantasy novel. I’m not sure why Wilson wants to inject social mores (sexual assault, objectification, survivor guilt) into her stories. They were so contrived that they rob the story of whatever impact they might have had. As many other reviewers have pointed out, the business with the hero chasing and heroine resisting went on for most (80%) of the story and it got extremely tedious. It’s as if the author doesn’t know how to transition to the next phase of the plot so she goes around and around in circles. A similar problem exists with the Tairen Soul series, and the issue in that book (heroine unable/unwilling to bond with her mate – does that ring a bell?) dragged on for 5 books and 2000 pages worth. The characters in The Sea King seem pretty one dimensional. The hero is too perfect to be true. The heroine starts out supposedly kind and gentle (a lifetime mask) but soon morphs into a foot-stomping, nose-up-in-the air, rude, bitchy, spoiled princess. We’re told dozens of times that the heroine is afraid to love because her father went killing mad after losing her mother; we’re told dozens of times, how the heroine has erected layers of barriers to control her gift. Really, does the author think the reader has forgotten, after being hit on the head so many times with the obvious? As they say, it’s better to show than tell – and it’s all telling, no showing. The villains in this book are not as well sketched as those in the Tairen Soul series, but then Wilson had 2000 pages to indulge in. She invents magic eaters to explain why the Seasons are unable to help themselves and allow themselves to be violated (that part is repulsive). I do like the interactions of the Calbernans with the sea/water and the sea creatures. Calberna is vaguely Hawaiian (many volcanic islands, a thousand miles from the continent, tropical weather) and the invented language also sounds vaguely Hawaiian. I did like the action in the second half of the story.

I also wish that Wilson has a map that includes the oceans/seas/Calberna, not just the continent.
Wilson is one of my faves. I loved the Tairen Soul series and book 1 of the Weather Mages series. I eagerly awaited this one. It was good but not up to the level of her other books. I feel like maybe she was pressured to get this one out the door so maybe it wasn't edited as well as the others. I think Wilson's stories are so intricate and vast that her publishers should just give her space and time to work her magic. I could be wrong but that's my theory anyway. So about this book...
The story was sweet but it moved waaaaaay too slowly. The courtship was too drawn out. I kept losing interest and I had to force myself to keep reading to see what the action was going to be. There was a lot of repetitive dialogue between the seasons as well. Don't get me wrong I love them but I don't need that much exposure to them in Gabbie's story. Sometimes the author would refer to the seasons by their first name but later she would call them by their gift name. It was a little confusing at first but then annoying as she kept doing it.
Regarding Dilys, he was a great character, only too perfect. Gab was flawed and damaged and therefore mi'h more interesting.
One thing I will say about this book and the world of Mystral I love the fact that her characters are diverse. That's almost unheard of in this genre so good on you Ms. Wilson!
