Have you ever been taken in by a listing in a TV magazine and tuned into a show thinking you would be watching, say, a cooking show and, instead, finding out that you had tuned into a 30-minute infomercial for a set of steak knives? If so, that’s the same feeling you would have if you picked up “Now You’re a Publisher,” thinking the book would be, as its subtitle advertises, “A Guide to Self-Publishing.” It’s not. Instead, it’s a 30-page advertisement for the services of its author.

The author of “Now You’re a Publisher” is Inscribe Digital, a company that provides a variety of services for writers who are looking to publish their own books. Under the guise of showing novices how to “make your book stand out and be read,” they instead spend the entire 30 pages not so subtly trying to intimidate would-be authors by making the entire publishing process sound as technical and difficult as possible… unless the author uses their services to get through all the difficult parts of the process.

“Now You’re a Publisher” offers a few bits of very general and often very obvious bits of advice, such as informing writers that a good-looking cover is essential for good sales. And how might one find such a good-looking cover design? Their advice is to hire a professional cover designer. And how would one find such a designer? Well, by an odd coincidence, among the services that the company offers is “Cover Image Design,” which ensures that their designers will “get the look you want for your book.”

In addition to this constant and shameless hucksterism, Inscribe Digital tries to make the self-publishing process sound even more difficult by using a lot of technical language that they never define or explain. An example: “many of our publishers develop multiple files: an ‘enhanced’ version of their eBook, retailer-specific files, retailer-specific CSS, or backward compatible HTML.” For those who are baffled as to the meaning of that sentence, Inscribe Digital will help them manage those conversions and provide guidance on changing industry standards as part of their services.

When Inscribe Digital isn’t trying to frighten would-be authors, they are tooting their own horn… a lot. “Now You’re a Publisher” contains a number of testimonials, scattered throughout the book, from published authors, all written in a bold, italicized font, proclaiming how wonderful the company is. By my count, the book contains about twice as many testimonials as it does actually useful advice.

One thing that “Now You’re a Publisher” doesn’t mention is the cost of using the services of Inscribe Digital, but I’m guessing from the rather comprehensive package they offer, that it’s rather pricey, which is probably at odds with the goals of most would-be authors to maximize their earnings by not splitting them with a publisher. It would seem that using Inscribe Digital merely exchanges one type of cost for another. And, to make it worse, the company waits until the last chapter to tell anyone who has read that far that it usually won’t accept an author unless that author already has five active titles. So, the people most in need of the types of services Inscribe Digital offers, namely those with no experience, can’t even purchase them to begin with.

Fortunately, “Now You’re a Publisher” is offered for free on Amazon. But, in this case, readers definitely get what they are paying for, namely a fairly hard sell sales pitch disguised as a self-help guide. I don’t know anything about the value of Inscribe Digital’s services, but I do know the value of this book. There are guides to self-publishing that actually give would-be authors useful advice. “Now You’re a Publisher” isn’t one of them.

Now You're a Publisher A Guide to SelfPublishing INscribe Digital INsights Book 1 eBook INscribe Digital Kelly Peterson Reviews

As with any book, when someone is new to publishing, any information can go a long ways. There was info that I found very helpful and also gave me additional ideas. I would recommend this to anyone new to publishing.
It's not the best book or guide to self-publishing that I have read in the last year. This little ebook had a Smart Book Title - it was probably the best part of the book.

I did find some snippets of information that I had not thought of before, but they would not work as well if you wanted to self-publish.

As they say in the movie review business, skip it or you could choose to stream it.
Interesting, but nothing much that is not possible to learn fast enough yourself on internet. But If you are not an Entrepreneur your self, it might be a better experience for you reading this book than it has been for me.
This is only for INscribe Digital users
Less a how-to than a sales pitch for a service. A little good information to be gleaned, but on balance, I feel cheated.
Loved that there is a resource for authors all in one place to make it simple for them. Authors need to focus on creation and the services in this book help them in that manner.

Writers be warned this isn't a book of advice on digital publishing. This is a shameless promotional leaflet of a company that provides "publishing" services on the Internet. All the book does, it tells you which services they have to offer, with just a smattering of very basic publishing suggestions on one or two pages in the middle of the book. This book can't possibly offer anything even to a novice publisher, unless he or she is shopping around for a company like this one.

While not bad in itself (a free promotional leaflet, what's there not to like?) I find the book's title and especially the blurb misleading to the point of being fraudulent. They should have made the message clear by saying that this is a promotional leaflet, but then no one would download it, right? Utterly useless. Avoid!
